Priyanka Chopra is playing a pop singer, not on reel but in real life. The Bollywood actress is writing and recording for her debut music album which will be released on an international platform.

Chopra has signed a worldwide recording agreement with the US-based Universal Music Group and Desi Hits, a fusion entertainment company that gives a platform to artistes of Indian and South Asian origins.

The actress said on Friday that singing was her long-cherished dream which was finally coming true.

"I am excited about getting an opportunity to present my musical dimension on a world platform," added Chopra, who is a trained Western classical singer.

"I will be working with some of the most illustrious names in the international music industry. This is a fascinating new experience and I am thoroughly enjoying the journey," she said.

To be sung in English, the songs are written by the actress whose musical career will be managed in the West by Troy Carter who also manages Lady Gaga.

"Priyanka's foray into the American music industry meets the vision of our company which strives to fuse the best of the eastern and western culture to create good music," said Anjula Acharia-Bath, CEO of Desi Hits.

Recording labels associated with the project can't stop raving about their association with the Bollywood heroine.

"Pop music has always had a love affair with Indian culture and with Priyanka's talent, we have the opportunities to push the boundaries of popular culture," said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records.

Anthony Saleh, executive vice-president and general manager of Atom Factory, felt the actress had the ability to redefine world pop music.

Bollywood insiders said there are several digital 'voice altering' tools these days that can make anybody sound melodious by auto tuning and pitch correction.

“However, no software can alter the basic texture and characteristics of a voice without sounding flat and artificial," said a leading music composer.
